Komodo National Park has 3 main islands, Komodo, Rinca, and Padar Island. But besides those three, there are many smaller islands scattered around the area that have an equally beautiful landscape and environment. One of the popular ones is Kanawa Island. You can access the island via Komodo Boat Tour or take a local boat from Labuan Bajo.
Kanawa Island, not to be mistaken with Kenawa Island located in NTB, is one of the small islands on Komodo National Park. This island only has small inhabitants of people. However, it has an amazing underwater life that you can clearly see from the surface. Corals, Plants and Exotic fishes are decorating the bottom of the shallow waters tempting people to join the fun.
Visiting the Island by joining Komodo Boat Tour
The Komodo boat is the most convenient way to gain access to Kanawa Island. By joining the Komodo liveaboard, you can enjoy every single one of Komodo National Park beauty with ease. That, of course, include Kanawa Island, which may not be as beautiful as the other attractions. But it’s still a nice addition to your trip.
What to do on Kanawa Island?
Snorkeling — Should be the activity that people look forward to the most on the Komodo boat tour. Like I said before there’s a lot of coral reefs around the area and exotic fishes like turtles, dolphins and even shark. Wait did you just said shark? Well, no need to worry because the black fin sharks that live around there are not dangerous. You can even get closer to take a picture! But just for precaution, don’t provoke them.
Watching the sunrise and sunset – The view of both sunrise and sunset is best seen on the beach. That is especially true for Kanawa Island because even among other islands in Komodo National Park, people often say that Kanawa has the most beautiful view. You can get up at around 5 and watch the sun slowly illuminating the island or wait until 6 in the evening to watch it goes away for the day. At sunset the locals usually play some music near the beach to live up the area.
Relaxing – Kanawa doesn’t have hotels or resorts that you can stay in, but there’s a unique gazebo that people can use to relax built around the beach. This gazebo is made from bamboo with curtains and bigger than the normal one, they even have a toilet on it. Laying here while listening to the sound of waves and feel the warmth of the ocean breeze in your cheek are really something everyone would enjoy, makes you wanted to stay there forever.
Hiking – Closer to the land, there’s a hill nearby that you can trek or should I say hike because the trail is not really hard. On top of the hills, you can view the island from above and witness a gorgeous scenery. An ideal spot for taking memorable photos or record a video.
